CIDBT 4004 Fundamental Skills in Dog Handling & Training
Course Info
This course is all about dogs; dogs, dogs and more dogs… understanding dogs, handling dogs and training dogs. This course is aimed at the dog lover who wants to take their knowledge further either with their own dog or looking to venture into the world of professional dog training…
It is designed to teach you how to handle a dog and carry out basic dog training rather than teaching you how to be a dog training instructor. The emphasis is on the beginner dog handler and people new to dog training or the dog training profession.
Spread over three phases you’ll learn about things such as how and why we approach dogs the way we do, how to handle a dog both around the home and in public places on and off lead, the use of voice when dealing with dogs as well as body language, canine communication and basic dog training including marker training, core exercises and some fun stuff.
The course, split into three phases, can be undertaken at any time and over any reasonable period within a maximum of six months from the date of registration. This course culminates in a fantastic one-day workshop at the Kennel Club Building in Warwickshire.

Phase 1 (Home Study)
This provides you with an opportunity to research canine body language and different breeds and their unique, breed and individual specific behaviours. Learning about the impact of early learning, nutrition and all things puppy; including toilet training, breed specific socialisation, habituation and early obedience training.
Phase 2 (Home Study)
This Phase discusses the various skills required to train a dog successfully. We look at the use of voice, body language, play and motivation; all factors that can make dog training easy or difficult, create success or induce failure. We look at training a dog from the outset, teaching basic training exercises and advancing the training in real life situations. Documenting ‘how to train’ basic exercises prepares you for putting it into practice on Phase 3, the workshop.
Phase 3 (Workshop)
This workshop is a relaxed, fun day covering basic dog handing and dog training techniques; learning to assess canine body language, teaching basic exercises, the use of equipment, marker training and much more. Students are expected to bring a dog with them, (we can make exceptions) and will be sent a form to complete about their dog prior to the workshop.
This phase includes:
- Observation of human and canine body language
- Hands-on work with dogs
- Basic dog handling techniques
- Attending a dog training class
- Teaching exercises such as, ‘loose lead walking’, ‘recall’, ‘touch’, ‘stay’, ‘watch’,
- and other useful exercises.
- One-to-one and group activities
- Classroom discussions and observations
The workshop is held at the Kennel Club Building, Warwickshire. Refreshments are available throughout the day and a buffet lunch is provided.
After you have completed the workshop you are required to complete an evaluation form prior to your certificate being dispatched.
