This course is all about dogs; dogs, dogs and more dogs… understanding dogs, handling dogs and training dogs. This course is aimed at the dog lover who wants to take their knowledge further either with their own dog or looking to venture into the world of professional dog training…
Suitable for beginners, the course provides an introduction to canine communication, puppy development and the foundations of dog training. You will learn how dogs communicate through body language, how early experiences can influence behaviour and learning, and how to better understand the dogs around you through observation and interpretation.
The course also explores how dogs learn, the difference between handling and training, and the role that motivation, play, voice and rewards can have in successful training. In addition, you will consider the characteristics of different breeds and how these may influence training approaches and outcomes.
Spread over two home-study phases, this course provides a solid foundation in understanding dogs and developing the practical knowledge needed to build positive relationships and achieve successful training outcomes.
The course, split into two phases, can be undertaken at any time and over any reasonable period.

Phase 1 (Home Study)
This introductory phase explores the foundations of understanding dogs and how they communicate. You will learn how dogs use body language to convey information and how developing strong observation skills can help you better understand canine behaviour and interactions.
The phase also examines puppy development and the impact of early learning experiences. Topics include nutrition, toilet training, socialisation, habituation, breed-specific considerations and the introduction of early obedience training. You will explore how a puppy’s early experiences can influence their confidence, learning and future behaviour, providing a solid foundation for successful dog ownership and training.
Phase 2 (Home Study)
This phase introduces the foundations of dog training and explores how dogs learn. You will examine the difference between handling and training, develop an understanding of both human and canine body language, and learn how effective communication influences training success.
The phase also explores motivation and how factors such as play, voice and rewards can be used to encourage learning and strengthen the relationship between dog and owner. In addition, you will consider the characteristics of different dog breeds and how these may influence training approaches and outcomes.
Workshop Optional – booked seperately
This workshop is a relaxed, fun day covering basic dog handing and dog training techniques; learning to assess canine body language, teaching basic exercises, the use of equipment, marker training and much more. Students are expected to bring a dog with them, (we can make exceptions) and will be sent a form to complete about their dog prior to the workshop.
This phase includes:
- Observation of human and canine body language
- Hands-on work with dogs
- Basic dog handling techniques
- Attending a dog training class
- Teaching exercises such as, ‘loose lead walking’, ‘recall’, ‘touch’, ‘stay’, ‘watch’,
- and other useful exercises.
- One-to-one and group activities
- Classroom discussions and observations
The workshop is held at the Kennel Club Building, Warwickshire. Refreshments are available throughout the day and there are various outlets for lunch to be purchased.
